Sky Research is an innovative technology company dedicated to delivering practical solutions for the most difficult munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) detection problems. Sites contaminated with MEC often contain hundreds non-hazardous scrap items for every hazardous MEC encountered. Conventional mapping methods, whether based on mag-and-flag or digital geophysical mapping (DGM), are unable to reliably distinguish between hazardous and non-hazardous items. Consequently, every metallic is excavated making clearance slow and costly.
SKY Classification Technologies revolutionize MEC clearance by accurately distinguishing hazardous MEC from non-hazardous scrap. This greatly reduces remediation costs by significantly cutting the number of excavations required to remove all MEC from a site. At the recent ESTCP Pole Mountain, Wyoming, deployment the SKY3D platform and associated advanced processing algorithms recovered all 158 MEC (37 mm to 76 mm) while leaving 2,039 of 2,212 scrap items (93% of scrap) in the ground. At a wooded site at Camp Beale, California, SKY's Hand-held discriminator (SKYHD) recovered all 120 MEC (including small fuzes) while digging only 25% of the scrap (198 of 774 items).
Sky Classification Technologies also accuratly identify ordnance type. Over 98% of the MEC were correctly identified at the Pole Mountain site. This ability for accurate MEC identification is revolutionizing the Remedial Investigation (RI) process by providing a means to non-intrusively determine the accurate nature and extent of contamination without excavating large numbers of anomalies. Sky Research is the only company in the world that has all the required equipment, proven algorithms and expert staff for safely reducing the cost of MEC clearance and speeding up site assessment and clearance.
SKY operates three platforms tailored for optimal classification performance in different environments:
